LifesavER Knowledge: Is Your Fever Already Dengue?

06/19/2025

The Department of Health (DOH) has raised concern over the sharp increase in dengue cases nationwide. From January to April 2025, DOH recorded 95,262 cases—a 75% spike compared to the 54,556 cases reported during the same period last year. While a decline was noted beginning in late March, the threat remains high as the rainy season begins, creating more breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Dengue is a viral illness transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. With symptoms often resembling the common flu, many people overlook the early signs—especially in children, who may have difficulty describing what they’re feeling. This Dengue Awareness Month, Maxicare reminds the public that early detection and prevention are key to staying safe.

To reduce the risk, health authorities advise covering water containers, eliminating stagnant water, and practicing proper waste disposal to prevent mosquito breeding.

Still, the challenge lies in recognizing when a fever might already be a case of Dengue. The signs often become more noticeable after the fever subsides, usually between the third and seventh day of illness. Watch out for high fever (40°C or 104°F), vomiting, stomach pain, muscle pain, rash, redness of the face and neck, loss of appetite, and diarrhea:

If you or a loved one shows these symptoms, seek immediate medical care. Early diagnosis can help prevent complications and improve outcomes.

With the rising cost of healthcare, being financially prepared is just as important as knowing the symptoms. The Maxicare LifesavER prepaid emergency card, given that it’s a one-time purchase, provides an affordable and convenient option for emergency coverage, including Dengue, pneumonia, viral infections, and more.

For only Php 2,299, LifesavER offers outpatient emergency care coverage of up to Php 25,000 at Maxicare-accredited hospitals nationwide. Valid for individuals aged 15 to 65, the card is good for one-time use within a year of activation.

For those who want added protection, Maxicare LifesavER+, priced at Php 6,999, covers emergency cases that may lead to confinement, with a limit of up to Php 50,000. It also includes global emergency assistance through Assist America, valid for travel-related emergencies up to 90 days.

Plus, both LifesavER and LifesavER+ emergency prepaid cards come with life insurance coverage for accidental death, disablement, and dismemberment up to Php 50,000.

Health emergencies can happen at any time. This Dengue Awareness Month, take a proactive step toward protection—for yourself and your family.
