3 Things you need to know about flu

01/09/2023

Flu season in the Philippines coincides with the rainy season, starting in June and going until the end of the year. The influenza virus thrives in weather that is either cold and dry, or humid and rainy. Here’s what you should know about the flu to keep your body healthy.

Fact #1 The flu is a common respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus

The flu is often mistaken for the cold. However, flu symptoms can be severe and lead to serious complications. Flu viruses are spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can travel about two meters through the air and could cause flu if inhaled by people nearby.

Fact #2: You may be contagious, even before you develop symptoms

You may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as when you are sick with symptoms. Some otherwise healthy adults can infect others one day before symptoms develop and up to seven days after becoming sick. Common symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, sore throat, and coughing.

Fact #3: Annual vaccinations are important as the flu virus is constantly changing

Flu vaccines are especially recommended for those who are at higher risk of developing flu complications such as persons with chronic conditions, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and children younger than five years old.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated every year. Other ways to reduce the risk of getting the flu include washing your hands with soap and water frequently (or using a hand sanitizer), covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, wearing a mask when you’re sick, and practicing a healthy lifestyle to boost your immune system.
