Spotting the signs of burnout

When our schedules get busy, it can be hard to stay on top of our mental health, especially if it doesn’t feel like anything is wrong. However, prolonged periods of over-work, without any breaks, can lead to burnout and negatively affect your overall wellness.

Maintaining good mental health starts with being more aware of our feelings. Learn how to spot the signs of burnout to take action before it becomes more serious.

 

Exhaustion

You may feel both physically and emotionally exhausted. This might mean that you won’t be able to cope with problems that pop up around you. And this can manifest physically – some of the most common symptoms include frequent headaches or body aches.

 

Numbness

When you’re burnt out, you may care less about anything or have the same motivation to accomplish work as before. This can affect how you approach the things in life that you usually appreciate or hold important, such as activities with your loved ones or work.

 

Inability to concentrate

In connection to numbness, burnout might make it impossible to focus on anything, even simple tasks. You may be easily distracted, leading to reduced performance at work. Since you’re already feeling exhausted, your concentration level will be taking a pretty big hit when you’re burnt out, and it can affect not just your work but your creativity as well.

 

Changes in your diet and sleep

An early sign of burnout is sudden changes in your regular habits. You might be shifting away from your regular diet – often resulting in a preference for high fat, high calorie “fast food” with less emphasis on healthy food.

It can also affect how you sleep. Whether it’s an inability to fall asleep at night or feeling like you need a nap during the day, burnout can wreak havoc on your regular sleeping patterns, creating a feedback loop to exhaustion.
