How to keep cool in the summer heat

 

The heat index in the country has been alarmingly high for the past few summer months, and heat-related illnesses have been on the rise. This has underscored the importance of staying cool during summer to prevent heat-related illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has weighed in on how we can all keep cool now. Here are a few of their recommendations.

 

Stay in cool areas

The simplest way to beat the heat is to stay in cooler areas. This includes staying indoors as much as possible or in the shade, avoiding direct sun exposure. Staying in well-ventilated places is also an option.

It may also be ideal to seek refuge in air-conditioned spaces like the mall, a restaurant, or any available co-working space.

 

Keep your body cool

Your clothes play a big role in keeping your body warm. It stands to reason that if the temperature is when the temperature is warm, you remove layers of clothing as much as possible. But you can also cool down your body by wearing loose-fitting clothing that will give your sweat enough space to evaporate. The color of your clothes is also important; darker clothes will absorb more heat than lighter clothes.

You can cool your body with a cold shower if you feel too hot. Barring that, you can also place a wet/cold compress around areas of your body where heat escapes, such as the neck, back, chest, armpits, and over your shoulders.

 

Avoid the sun during the hottest hours of the day

While it might seem hot throughout the day, the most dangerous time to be out under the sun is still at noon, until 3 PM. This is when the sun is directly overhead.

This is why avoiding being out under the sun at these hours is best. If you can schedule your outdoor activities, schedule them in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is not at its peak.

 

Keep hydrated

Since you are expected to sweat more these days, it is important to keep yourself hydrated. Monitor your water intake throughout the day – this is especially important if you are sick or taking any maintenance medication. Take caffeinated and alcoholic beverages in moderation, as these can increase fluid losses.

Eating more fruits and vegetables is a fun and tasty way of keeping hydrated. These foods naturally contain water, which contributes to your overall water intake.

You may also consider fresh juices or coconut water, as these may contain electrolytes that can replenish what you’ve lost through sweat.
